MAMMOTH CREEK PARCEL UPDATE + SURVEY
Help Shape the Future of the Mammoth Creek Parcel
Exciting progress is underway in Mammoth Lakes and your voice matters.
The Town is launching a community-led planning effort for the Mammoth Creek Parcel, a 24-acre open space in the heart of town. This early visioning phase is a prime opportunity for residents to guide the future use of this site—whether in recreation, conservation, access, or other community-enhancing ideas.
The Eastern Sierra Climate & Communities Resilience Project (ESCCRP) — also known as the “Mammoth Donut Project”—is a collaborative, landscape-scale forest restoration initiative designed to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire and build long-term forest resilience. The project covers approximately 58,000 acres across the Inyo National Forest and undeveloped, non-federal lands within the Town of Mammoth Lakes.
As part of this effort, the Whitebark Institute conducted fuels reduction work on three priority parcels within the town that were identified as high to very high wildfire risk—including the Mammoth Creek Parcel.
The thinning work is now complete, and it focused on:
Reducing overly dense stands of whitebark pine and other conifers
Lowering wildfire risk near developed areas
Restoring healthier, more resilient forest conditions
This work not only improves ecological health but also enhances community safety and opens the door for thoughtful planning of public access, recreation, and education opportunities.
With the fuels work done, it’s time to look ahead—and we need your input to help guide what comes next for the Mammoth Creek Parcel.
