SHERWIN AREA RECREATION PLAN - APPROVED!
The U.S. Forest Service has officially approved the Sherwin Area Recreation Plan (SHARP) 3.
This decision sets the stage for a thoughtfully designed network of sustainable trails in Sherwin Meadows, replacing an unplanned web of user-created paths that have caused erosion and impacted sensitive habitat areas over time. SHARP 3 includes the restoration of degraded trail segments, decommissioning of unsustainable routes, and the construction of new trails that better serve hikers, bikers, and equestrians — all while protecting natural and cultural resources.
This success is the result of years of collaboration between the Inyo National Forest, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Tribal partners, and the outdoor recreation community. Public feedback during the planning process was overwhelmingly supportive — a strong endorsement of this community’s dedication to stewardship and sustainability.
Trail implementation is scheduled to begin in summer 2025 and will continue through fall 2026.
We are excited to keep moving forward together. SHARP 3 is just one more example of how strong partnerships and shared goals lead to lasting impact on the ground.
