TANGLE FREE WATERS - SORT THE LINE PARTY - SUCCESS!

Mammoth Lakes Recreation would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of the dedicated volunteers and community superstars who came together last week to sort and clean the fishing line collected throughout the 2025 fishing season. While it may not be the most glamorous task, it is an absolutely essential one—ensuring that the discarded line is properly processed, recycled, and kept out of our landfills.

This season our staff and volunteers diligently serviced each of the 40 collection stations, keeping thousands of feet of line out of our landfills and away from wildlife.
— Kim Anaclerio - MLR Executive Director

Improperly disposed fishing line poses serious threats to wildlife. When line ends up in the landfill, it does not break down and can entangle or endanger birds and other animals. By working together to recycle this material, we are helping to safeguard the very ecosystems that make Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra such a unique and treasured place to live, visit, and recreate.

Thanks to your efforts and support, our 40 fishing line collection stations across the region have provided anglers with an easy and effective way to dispose of their line responsibly. These collection stations will remain in place year-round, and we encourage everyone to continue to use them until the season closes. Every piece of line recycled is one less hazard in our lakes, streams, and open spaces.

Our stewardship work is a year-round effort. We welcome ongoing sponsorship opportunities to support all of our programs, ensuring we can expand initiatives like fishing line recycling, trail support, creative and outdoor education.

Additionally, volunteer sign-ups for the 2026 season will open in January. This is a wonderful way for community members to get involved, share their time and talents, and directly contribute to the health and sustainability of our environment.

We would like to give a special thank you to the Town of Mammoth Lakes’ Outdoor Recreation Programs Manager, whose partnership and teamwork makes stewardship possible in our community and this year’s event a success!

Through initiatives like these, Mammoth Lakes Recreation reaffirms its commitment to protecting and enhancing the extraordinary natural resources of the Eastern Sierra. With the continued support of our sponsors, volunteers, and community partners, we are confident that together we can sustain the beauty, health, and accessibility of our outdoor spaces for generations to come.
