SUMMER OF STEWARDSHIP - KICKOFF WEEKEND

Each year the Mammoth Lakes Trail System (MLTS) kicks off it’s summer stewardship programs on National Trails Day - the first Saturday in June. As an avid supporter of our trail system, we are so excited to partner with Leave No Trace (LNT) and be part of the Spotlight Program to bring added elements of stewardship and learning to this exciting weekend!

The Leave No Trace organization has selected Mammoth Lakes as a 2024 Spotlight site. As outdoor areas all over the country are being impacted by record use, this new initiative from Leave No Trace shines a light on communities rising to meet this challenge with multi-day, onsite education and restoration initiatives. The diverse sites chosen in 2024 span the country, each with unique environmental challenges. The goal of the initiative is to equip each Spotlight area with relevant Leave No Trace tools that address the impacts the site is facing and ultimately, to foster healthy lands and people.

From May 30 - June 1, a Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team will be in Mammoth Lakes with Mammoth Lakes Recreation and the Mammoth Lakes Trail System to work with the community and local land agencies to deliver Leave No Trace education as well as to partner on restoration and stewardship projects.

To kick the weekend off, we will be presenting a workshop aimed at equipping front line professionals, including Town of Mammoth Lakes Hosts, Parks and Recreation staff, Mono County Recreation staff, and staff from both the Inyo National Forest and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, with the knowledge and tools to practice and pass on Leave No Trace principles. That evening, we have invited the local scout groups to participate in a workshop geared for the youth of our community. Friday night will surely be a highlight as we play trivia at Mammoth Brewing Company focusing on our local area and Leave No Trace. Stop by Mammoth Brewing Company to learn how practicing Leave No Trace can help keep Mammoth Lakes and its surroundings safe and sustainable. Don’t miss this chance to participate in fun stewardship trivia and win some cool prizes!

After all that fun, it’s hard to believe we’ve saved the best for last!! Saturday morning, June 1, meet at the Mammoth Lakes Library at 9am for free bagels, LNT mini-workshop and the first stewardship event of the season for the Mammoth Lakes Trail System. The Trails Program Manager will have plenty of projects for you to choose from that morning!

It’s going to be an amazing summer here in the Eastern Sierra and we are so excited to kick it off with these great partners and opportunities for our community.
